Together, our group has over 60 years of combined experience working in wealth management and each member of the team brings their own unique experience. Markets clocked in their best January since the 1980’s, following the worst December since the Great Recession[i]. Unfortunately, the month started off in a less-than-appealing way as earnings season brought on some unexpected bad news with many companies reporting lower revenue figures, citing a slowing Chinese consumer. Investors panicked and continued the selling that had begun in the fourth quarter. Investors globally took this as a warning and renewed concerns over a broad global slowdown and a decelerating Chinese economy (something the Investment Committee cited last month in our monthly commentary).
To the rescue in Superman fashion, the U.S. Federal Reserve and Jerome Powell swooped in to calm markets. In a meeting shortly after the beginning of the month, Mr. Powell assured markets the Committee was “patient” in their approach to monetary policy and would “be prepared to adjust policy quickly and flexibly and use all of our tools to support the economy should that be appropriate.”[i] Stock markets reacted to this as if the cops just walked in on an underage party and told everyone to party on! And that’s just what U.S. stocks did, moving sharply higher (+8%) for the month, with some of the top performing sector leaders continuing to outperform.

There are many things that could affect the overall equity market and any individual stocks you may own—from economic trends to geopolitical events like an election. What is certain is that the market will always have its peaks and dips.
This market cycle can make it tempting for investors to attempt to buy and sell stocks at particular times to maximize gains and avoid down periods. This investment strategy is known as market timing, the practice of moving in and out of the market based on predicting when the market will shift.
Although the idea of market timing can be tempting, it is also extremely difficult for most investors to predict the future of the market. In fact, those who try to time the market may actually underperform investors who simply buy and hold stocks.
One reason is the tendency of the market to experience big upswings and downswings on adjacent days during periods of market volatility. That means an investor who sells after a substantial down day for the market may miss a subsequent period of gains. Also, many investors let emotions dictate their actions, leading them to buy stocks when the market has already gained in value, only to sell when the market has declined, leading to sluggish returns. Moreover, even with sophisticated tools to analyze the factors affecting stock prices, it is very difficult to forecast future stock market movements.
Along with possibly missing out on market gains, market timing can have other penalties. The transaction costs from buying and selling stocks can add up and drag down overall returns.

Michael and his team are service providers at the highly-renowned Conway Center for Family Businesses in Central Ohio, where you can often find his team providing education and services to business owners. An avid outdoorsman, Michael is involved with various environmental groups and actively supports causes for wildlife conservation. He is passionate about music and plays guitar. Most importantly, he is a husband to wife Leyla, and the father of three young boys, Daxton, Weston and Dalton, who are his greatest sources of joy and love.

Erin joined Morgan Stanley in 2014 and became a member of The Fortis Group in 2017. Erin excels at crafting detailed financial plans that are designed to help individuals and families reach their lifestyle goals or plan for a major purchase or life event. She has helped clients plan for and implement solutions for successful retirements, long term care, higher education funding, wedding costs and many other lifestyle needs.
Erin currently holds her Series 7 and Series 66 securities licenses and her Life, Accident, and Health Insurance License. She is a graduate of The Ohio State University with degrees in English and Political Science and a minor in Professional Writing and Communications. She currently serves as the Event Planning Chair for the Columbus-Based non-profit, Y.E.S. Columbus, which is a steering committee for the local Dress for Success chapter. She is a member of the Upper Arlington Women's Club and participates in many charity endeavors within her community. Patrick is the senior thought leader of our team’s Investment Committee. He oversees The Fortis Group’s overall investment strategy and is responsible for the daily tracking and updating of the team’s custom wealth management portfolios. His in-depth knowledge of the capital markets enables him to create and monitor portfolios that put to use innovative risk management solutions. Since joining Morgan Stanley in 2013, Patrick has maintained a strong commitment to providing clients with the highest standard of portfolio construction with special care toward addressing an individual’s dual needs relative to risk tolerance and performance return requirements. Patrick has a passion for staying up to date on the latest U.S. and International economic data and frequently leverages the best-in-class research and thought leadership as provided by the Morgan Stanley Global Investment Committee (GIC).
Patrick grew up in Lexington, Kentucky and received his degree in economics from the University of Kentucky in 2009, during which he had the opportunity to spend a few years traveling through Asia. His passion for all things finance ultimately led him to a position with Morgan Stanley in Columbus, Ohio. He currently lives in German Village and enjoys cheering on the Kentucky Wildcats and the Columbus Blue Jackets.
