3 Signs It Might Be Time to Take Inventory of Your Investments

By Jon Cleary
Financial Advisor

It happens to the best of us: we get busy and things that are very important in the long-term fall to the wayside as we deal with short-term problems. But if you have investments that aren’t being actively managed by a well-trained professional, you could be opening yourself up to unnecessary market risk or missing out on critical-to-your-success investment returns. If you find yourself in any of these categories, it may be time to take action:

1.) You recently left your job, and left a 401(k) behind

Letting a 401(k) account sit with an old employer can create an out-of-sight-out-of-mind mentality. These investments can fall out of line with your stated goals and risk profile very quickly. Consider all of your options, such as an IRA rollover or consulting with a financial advisor to review your allocation.

2.) You’re feeling the need for balance

Multiple investment accounts across multiple institutions can sometimes feel like a form of asset allocation in and of itself. However, it usually leads to an overall picture that is not desirable. When the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing you’re bound to end up with either too much risk or not enough. Have one Financial Advisor look at your entire portfolio to determine whether or not there are any potential problems.

3.) You’re starting to lose track of all of your account names and passwords

In today’s world, you need a username for absolutely everything. Your bills, favorite retailers etc. Keeping track of all of these login credentials can make your head spin and potentially cause a cyber security nightmare. Furthermore, keeping all of these accounts updated when addresses or beneficiaries need changed is impossible. Consolidating your accounts at one firm can solve these problems and give you a central, singular location where all of the maintenance can easily be done.

If it feels like the right time to take inventory of your investments and simplify your processes, give me a call at 614-269-3404 or send me an email at Jon.Cleary@morganstanley.com to schedule an appointment.

IC Commentary

Investment Committee (IC) Commentary

Headed by Financial Advisor Patrick Huang, our team's Investment Committee ("IC") meets weekly to review portfolio performance and discuss key market news. At the end of each month, we publish our compiled thoughts entitled Capital Markets Summary. Please continue reading to find our most recent publication.

SNAP SHOT

  • U.S. stock markets recorded their worst monthly return since 2011
  • International stocks continue to underperform U.S. stocks
  • Expect the Federal Reserve to continue to increase interest rates in 2018
  • Portfolio positioning remains unchanged after beginning shift defensive in June
  • U.S. mid-term elections will dominate U.S. stock’s directionality in the near term

MARKET OVERVIEW

The fact U.S. unemployment hit a 50 year low and the S&P 500 tallied its worst monthly returns since 2011 all in the same month seems very counterintuitive. An unemployment rate of 3.7% (the lowest since the 1960s) would imply a strong labor market and a robust economy. However the implications of fallout in US stocks markets by -6.8% this month prove the opposite and is a testament to the type of market environment we are in today.

To boot, markets finally saw sector leadership begin to show signs of breaking down, with Technology and Consumer Discretionary seeing declines of -8% and        -11%, respectively. As we have written about prior...

Corporate Retirement

Corporate Retirement Plan Solutions

Managing a corporate retirement plan can often be a source of stress for plan sponsors. Your company's retirement plan should be an asset that elevates your company's benefit offering beyond compensation. Our team has the capacity to offer plan sponsors and their participants group education seminars in addition to individualized financial planning. We have seen first hand how one-on-one connections with plan participants increases both participation rates and deferral amounts, thereby aiding in key talent attraction and retention.
