MY MISSION STATEMENT
Experience, intellectual capital and dedicated personal service to help you meet your life goals
Experience, intellectual capital and dedicated personal service to help you meet your life goals
With nearly 10 years of experience in financial services, I am passionate about educating my clients and their families on financial matters, as well as collaborating with them on solutions to help reach their short- and long-term financial goals.
I create financial plans utilizing both sides of the balance sheet. This allows me to create bespoke solutions that align with my clients' values and needs. As the plan is crafted and implemented, I work closely with their legal and tax professionals to help ensure true holistic wealth management.
At Morgan Stanley, my passion is supplemented with access to one of the world’s leading wealth management firms’ array of intellectual capital, technology, and talent in wealth management and investment banking.
In the fall of 2016, I achieved the designation of CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®) by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. In addition, I have earned the designation Chartered Retirement Planning CounselorSM through the College for Financial Planning.
Securities Agent: CA, CO, FL, IA, IL, KS, MI, NY, PA, VA; General Securities Representative; Investment Advisor Representative
While I have clients from many different backgrounds, the bulk of my clients are sales (primarily financial and real estate), technology, and creative professionals: developers, realtors, consultants, freelance writers, artists, and publishers.
As a consequence of working with these types of individuals, I have experience advising on restricted stock and incentive stock options, as well as dealing with self-employment issues such as small retirement plans and uneven cash flows. This also means my clients tend to have entrepreneurial endeavors or their own businesses as a sole source of income or as a "side hustle." As such, I've advised on traditional cash management and financing solutions, complex solutions such as raising capital, and business succession plans or liquidations.
Throughout the year, I try to join clients at their favorite restaurants, charitable events, sports venues, and so on. When you are my client, it's important to me to understand your values, your lifestyle, and what's important to you, as that's the reason you work and the reason you save and invest. All of my clients have impacted my values, my perspectives, and have each made me a better person in one way or another, which makes me more capable to understand your needs and help you achieve your goals.
I believe it's very important to be involved in the community where I live, work, and play. As such, I try to be on at least one non-profit organization's board at all times. Currently, I am on two boards. I serve on the board of the National Kidney Foundation's Iowa chapter, which is dedicated to the awareness, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease. I am also on the board of the After School Arts Program, a non-profit that serves at-risk students in the Des Moines area by providing educational content in the arts.
I am a firm believer in mentorship and typically am mentoring at least one person at any given point in time. I think of myself as a connector and enjoy introducing people with the goal of enriching both parties' lives in one way or another.
In the past, I served on the board of the Young Professionals Connection for three years, was runner-up for the 2013 Man of the Year fundraising competition for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and have volunteered for Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity.
I grew up in a rural north central Iowa in a small town called Renwick (population ~250), graduating from Humboldt High School in 2001. My parents still reside there. I have one brother, Jared, who lives in London, U.K. and is a tech lead and integration manager at a software company. The entire family attended Iowa State University.
Currently, I live in Windsor Heights with my partner, Amy Hughes, and my son, Aiden.
Aiden lives and attends school in Bettendorf, IA where he lives part-time with his mother. He's active in tennis and baseball and enjoys Pokémon, Legos, drawing, video games, and sports.
Amy is a University of Iowa alumna and Delivery Lead for Pillar Technology, which is located in downtown Des Moines. Amy volunteers with DSMHack, a non-profit that helps other non-profits with technology needs. She is passionate about vintage costume jewelry, good food, better wine, and great company.
I have a variety of interests ranging from rather nerdy to rather interesting, depending on one's perspective.
When I have time, I enjoy art as a member of the Des Moines Art Center's Salon 4700 and at the Yellow Door Gallery. I try to read as much as possible, be it for fun or for education. Writing poetry and fiction is a passion and is very enjoyable for me, but it's difficult to find the time to focus on that alone. Much to the chagrin of Amy, when I have time, I still enjoy playing video games. I very much enjoy architecture and design, preferring the mid-century modern style of elegance and functionality. I love to cook for other people, so entertaining at home is something we love to do; great food paired with great wines and even better company make for the best evenings.
Laughter and comedy is something that I can't get enough of, although I tend to veer towards cynical and occasionally dark comedy. The family spends time at the Wakonda Club pool in the summer time. I am an avid listener of music, with everything from hip hop to country/folk music in my playlists.
I appreciate true fashion and personal style, as I think that one's personality is expressed with clothing as much as it can with words or capabilities. I read about men's fashion and pay attention to the details. Related: I'm part of the Des Moines Gentleman's Hat Club.
Amy and I root on the Hawkeyes and Cyclones during football season, and I cheer on the Cyclones during basketball season. Finally, I love to play catch, build Legos, draw, read books, and, in general, spend time with Aiden.
