Dealing With Change

Some of life’s most meaningful events involve change. Some are joyous: marriage, the birth of a child or grandchild, a career move, retirement. Some are major liquidity events, like a sale of stock or a business. Others are difficult: divorce or death of a loved one. But most changes bring financial challenges. We help clients prepare for and navigate life’s transitions so they can keep up with the pace of change, have time to reflect, and satisfy lifestyle and legacy concerns.

Lori’s story: Why my work is meaningful to me
Helping people keep up with the pace of change in their lives has been a personal passion for me since I was 24 years old. That’s when my mother died, leaving me untethered and unprepared, especially financially – I had no idea how to manage money, plan ahead, think strategically, make smart decisions, or even set goals. Becoming financially independent required knowledge I didn’t have, at a time when my world had been turned upside down. I quickly realized I needed to respond to the challenge and take action. I read books, took courses, asked questions, and learned everything I could about the subject of money. Over time my mission became clear - to work with people facing change or unexpected adversity, and help make their transitions easier. After finishing a graduate degree in music, I enrolled in business school, working as a teaching assistant and piano instructor to pay my way. I enrolled in classes to earn my CPA and CFP designations, and eventually my Certified Investment Management Analyst certificate at the Wharton School. The learning has been constant as has my passion for my work.

Thirty years later, I have recently earned Morgan Stanley’s most exclusive designation – the Family Wealth Directorship, achieved by fewer than 2% of the firm’s Financial Advisors. Though my knowledge and skills have evolved, my commitment remains the same — to help people deal with change and use their money to achieve all that is important to them.

    A new perspective averts a disaster

    Composer Gustave Mahler said "All that is not perfect down to the smallest detail is doomed to perish." In wealth management, even a small detail can make all the difference.

    For example, one client had spent her life building a business enterprise with her partners. She came to us with clear goals and a wealth plan in place. We did a thorough discovery process nonetheless, during which we found a potentially devastating flaw in her estate planning – she had no protection against estate tax liabilities, putting her partnerships in jeopardy! We quickly took appropriate measures, but I think of her often – as a reminder to consider every detail and contingency, envision each scenario, plan for every potential transition.

    Reviewing a long relationship over lunch

    On the day of our lunch, I reviewed his files. He was a retired partner of a major consulting firm, and a long-term client with whom we had planned and executed a comprehensive wealth management plan, based on his retirement, estate and charitable giving goals. Everything had gone as planned despite a few market downturns along the way. But still, I was nervous when I sat down across from him at the restaurant. "I just wanted to personally thank you," he said. "for helping my wife and me achieve all we had hoped for." What a nice surprise! It was a wonderful reminder of how our work makes a difference for our clients.
